David, A Man After God’s Heart

Ps. 51:1-12

David was a king in Israel. He fell into the sin of adultery with Bathsheba and committed murder by arranging that Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband, be killed. Nathan, the prophet, confronted David concerning the sin; David did not try to find excuses for his actions, instead, he humbled himself before God. One of the symptoms of spiritual pride is finding excuses for one’s sin, or blaming others for one’s actions. A man who realises his spiritual poverty and desires to make heaven does not hesitate to confess his sin to God and ask for forgiveness. David went further to ask for a clean heart and a steadfast spirit. The goal is not just to acknowledge one’s spiritual poverty, but to seek to be built up spiritually and to be established in holiness. One who will inherit the kingdom of God will not remain a spiritual babe perpetually.

POINT OF EMPHASIS: Realising your being poor in spirit should drive you to aspire to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

PRAYER POINT: Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
