1 Kings 18:21 (KJV)
And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD [be] God, follow him: but if Baal, [then] follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” But the people said nothing. (1 Kings 18:21 NIV)
The Ministry of a prophet is different in type and function from that of a pastor.
A pastor comforts and gently guides. A prophet rebukes and firmly instructs
A pastor teaches. A prophet declares, Thus saith the Lord.
A pastor bears with people and tries to accommodate their weakness. A prophet confronts and corrects.
So the ministry of a prophet is correctional and confrontational. He doesn’t pat you on the back. He tells you the judgment of God to your face.
His message is simple: REPENT OR PERISH!
God sends prophets when he finds his people going into spiritual decay and rottenness. When the church is getting rotten and believers are becoming at ease in Zion, the horizon is set for the emergence of prophets.
The prophets comes to;
– challenge
– confront
– correct
Before Elijah came on the scene, Israel was in a backslidden condition. King Ahab and his wife Jezebel had introduced the nation to idol worship. The fear of God was gone and people served idols.
It’s not different today!
There are many idol worshipers both in the nation and the church.
Some worship;
– their bodies. Look at the craziness about physical beauty today.
According to statistics, The revenue of the U.S. cosmetic industry is estimated to amount to about 62.46 billion U.S. dollars in 2016.
So much money is spent on all kinds of crazy procedures from breast lifting to breast reduction to liposuction; cosmetic dentistry and the list goes on!
Look as beautiful as you can . But you are a fool if your body is beautiful and your soul is ugly.
– their money
– their spouses. There are people whose spouse are more important than God. They say, “oh my husband doesn’t like church and I just have to agree with him…”
There are young girls today who will say “No”to Jesus and “Yes” to a man-friend because , “I don’t want to loose him” !
– people even worship their children. Some parents are controlled by their children
– people worship their jobs
– others worship their success.
When they needed success, they prayed and cried to God. Now they have a new god. Their achievement is what they now worship.
Some of you are humble now because you’re poor. If some of you hit a million dollar today, you will delete the pastor’s number from your phone. It’s even alright if you delete my number as long as you don’t delete Jesus and the church from your memory!
