Discipline Of Memorising The Scriptures
Ps. 119:9-16
Daily devotional reading should not end with just reading the passage. We should practise the discipline of committing some verses to memory. The Psalmist hid the Word of God in his heart, that is, memorised the word that he might not sin against God. The verses you memorise get energised by the Holy Spirit to meet your need when the need arises. They help you make wise decisions (Psalm 119: 105); strengthen you when you are under stress and give you hope (Psalm 119:49); comfort you when you are sad (Jeremiah 15:16) and give you the substance to use in witnessing to unbelievers. Many adults regard memorisation of Bible verses as an exercise for the children only. This is an unhealthy spiritual stance. Beside the spiritual advantage of memorising Bible passages, it also keeps the mental capability of the person at optimal level.
Point of Emphasis: Your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you.
Prayer Point: Father, quicken me to be able to commit Your words to memory in Jesus’ name.
